This week we celebrate Thanksgiving – that day set aside for us to reflect on our many blessings. No matter our situation, each of us has many things for which to be thankful.
I am thankful today for a roof over my head, food on my table, family, friends, (reasonably) good health, a job and all of God’s beautiful nature that surrounds me. In this day and age, it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday life and all that it demands; this is when it becomes difficult to catch our breath and remember to count our blessings. I find that the best way to stop, breathe and reflect is to step outside, take a walk, ride a bike, or just have a seat. Breathe deeply, listen to the sounds around you, look at the trees, or the sky, or the water and just be in the moment.
In his book, The Nature Principle, author Richard Louv states that every day, our relationship with nature, or lack thereof, influences our lives. Increased research describes the restorative power of nature, its impact on our senses and intelligence, on our physical, psychological and spiritual health, and on the bonds of family and friendship. Thus, interaction with nature makes us calmer, better people. This year, that may be what’s needed most during the family gatherings!
Here in the south Delta, we’ve had extraordinary fall weather, what a great time to enjoy it! On this holiday that celebrates family, friends and blessings, remember to celebrate the blessings of nature, the fact that we don’t live in a concrete jungle, the fact that we are surrounded by trees, grasslands, forests, and all that inhabits it. Step outside, look around, relax, breathe deeply, and count your many blessings.
Happy Thanksgiving to all from LDP.
