2017 Lower Delta Talks Series Announced

March 8, 2017

Mississippi’s Lower Delta Partnership announces the 2017 Lower Delta Talks series. This will be the eighth lecture series celebrating the history, culture and nature of Mississippi’s Deep Delta. The talks begin on March 21 and continue on the third Tuesday of most months through November. Talks are held in the Fine Arts room of the Sharkey Issaquena Library at 6:30 p.m.

The opening talk will be by Delta State University archivist Emily Jones. She will talk about the History of the Mississippi Delta Chinese and her work with the Mississippi Delta Chinese Heritage Museum.

Delta Hot Tamales will be the topic of the April 18 talk by Anne Martin. Walt Grayson will join us on May 16 with his talk, “Looking Around the Lower Delta.” The Cooking Lady: Real Food from My Southern Kitchen will be presented on June 13 by Ann Hollowell of Greenville.

There will be no talk during the month of July. August 15 brings Holt Collier & The Delta Film Institute by James Mathews. Richard Grant, author of Dispatches From Pluto, will speak on September 19. On October 17, Cathy Shropshire will present “Pursuing a Dream” A Portrayal of Fannye A. Cook, Mississippi’s First Wildllife Conservation Leader. Rounding out the series is Willy Bearden on November 14 with his talk entitled “The Mississippi Delta is the Center of the Universe.”

This 2017 Lower Delta Talks series was named an official bicentennial project and is made possible in part by a grant from the Mississippi Humanities Council, through support from the Mississippi Development Authority. This series is also sponsored by Visit Mississippi, Sharkey County Historic Preservation Commission, Betsy Love Allen Chapter MSSDAR, Friends of the Sharkey Issaquena Library, and Mississippi’s Lower Delta Partnership.

Mark your calendars and join us at the library for the 2017 Lower Delta Talks.
