Eastern Tailed Blue Butterfly

Eastern Tailed Blue

Cupido comyntas

These tiny butterflies stay close to the ground and are often present in large numbers.

Butterfly Size: 7/8 – 1 1/8 inches

Habitats: Many open, sunny places including weedy areas and disturbed habitats.

Plants for the Eastern Tailed Blue Butterfly

HOST PLANTS

Many plants in the pea family including:

  • yellow sweet clover
  • alfalfa
  • various species of vetch 
  • clover 
  • wild pea 
  • and others

FOOD PLANTS

This butterfly has a low flight and a short proboscis, thus is found at flowers close to the ground which are open or short-tubed.

  • white sweet clover
  • shepherd’s needle
    wild strawberry
  • winter cress
  • cinquefoils
  • asters
