First observed in 2002 on the 100th anniversary of President Theodore Roosevelt’s famous bear hunt in Sharkey County resulting in the creation of the teddy bear, the Great Delta Bear Affair is held in October of each year. The Affair includes wildlife education, a 5K run and walk, archeological and birding tours, a nature walk, a chainsaw woodcarver, fantastic musical acts, a children’s interactive educational area, book signings, storytellers, games for children, arts and crafts, food vendors, an amazing fireworks display and more. Theodore Roosevelt living historian and impersonator, Case Hicks, is always featured to remind us of our festival's origin.

The Great Delta Bear Affair also provides opportunities to educate thousands of people about the past history and current status of the endangered black bear in Mississippi. Festival proceeds go to the Bear Education and Restoration group for their work.

Education Day is held for area 4th graders on the Friday before the Affair with interactive activities and educational booths set up around the square. The Youth Wildlife Olympics competition is for school and 4-H teams in grades 9-12. Students participate in both academic and technical contests for prizes.
